For trees over 40 feet, anywhere near a structure, or anywhere a future insurance claim is plausible, the ISA-certified arborist premium is the cheapest line on the quote. Here’s what actually differs between an ISA-certified crew and a general tree service in Tallahassee.
Certification Differences
ISA (International Society of Arboriculture) certification requires passing a comprehensive exam covering tree biology, identification, pruning, hazard assessment, and ANSI A300/Z133 standards. Continuing education and recertification are required. The TRAQ (Tree Risk Assessment Qualification) credential is separate and additional — it’s the formal credential for hazard tree assessment.
Work Differences
Pruning cuts that follow ANSI A300 (proper collar cuts, no topping, no lion-tailing). Documented risk assessment. Written reports for HOA / permit / insurance use. Equipment and PPE compliant with ANSI Z133.
When Certification Matters Most
Any tree over 40 ft. Any tree near a structure. Any work where a written report will be needed. Any heritage / canopy road / over-DBH tree. Any storm-damaged tree where insurance is involved.
When Certification Matters Less
Small backyard tree removal in open dropzone. Standard stump grinding. Routine deadwooding of small ornamentals. Even here, an insured crew is non-negotiable.
