Longleaf Pine Care in Tallahassee: Beetle, Lightning, and Storm Risk

Longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) is one of Tallahassee’s signature canopy species. Tall, straight, fire-adapted, and a critical part of the regional ecosystem. For homeowners with longleaf on the property, three risks dominate the care calendar: southern pine beetle pressure during drought years, lightning vulnerability, and storm-driven snap failures during named events.

The Beetle Risk

Southern pine beetle (Dendroctonus frontalis) attacks stressed pines, drilling through the bark and disrupting the cambium. The first visible sign is pitch tubes — white or red sap blobs on the bark. By the time multiple pitch tubes appear, the tree is typically beyond saving and removal is the right call to prevent spread to neighboring pines.

Prevention is stress management. Don’t prune during peak beetle pressure (June–August). Maintain soil moisture during drought (see drought watering protocols). Avoid damage to the root zone.

The Lightning Risk

Longleaf pines are tall and often the highest point in their immediate area, making them lightning targets. Tallahassee sits in one of the highest lightning-strike-density counties in the U.S. A lightning-struck longleaf may look healthy for weeks before failing. Vertical bark scars, sap weeping from the strike track, and progressive crown decline are all signals to bring in an arborist.

The Storm Risk

Longleaf pines snap rather than uproot in extreme winds — the failure mode is mid-trunk shear at the 50–75 foot mark. The May 2024 EF-2 tornado broke pines at 75 feet across Indianhead Acres.

Pre-season prep: TRAQ assessment for any longleaf within striking distance of a structure. Look for sweep, lean, and visible deadwood. Watch for beetle pressure during drought summers.
